I agree that some bikers just don't "get it." At the same time there are some skaters who think they "own" the park and aren't very accepting when newbies show up to skate. As for collisions, the Walla Walla park is pretty small. Bikers usually have much larger and faster runs. I could see that our park could get crowded very quickly if you had more than three bikers on it at one time. This is a perfect opportunity to raise money to expand. If you were to say that the park would be open to bikers after the expansion on the condition that bikers raised half of the needed funds, I am pretty sure that you would see a lot more support.
I use to ride freestyle, but got out of it awhile ago. I would have been more than willing to support a park that allowed bikes. Even though I don't ride anymore I would support a skate/bike park because I still have a lot of friends who ride.
Damage is always a problem in public parks regardless of who is "allowed" to use it. Whether it is from use/crashes or from vandalism, there will always be repairs that need to be done from time to time. The hope is that if a larger number of people are using something, then there is going to be a larger number of people willing to help maintain it. I am sure we could argue forever about bikes causing more damage, but I don't think that is the point. The point is that there is a large group of people in the community (BMX freestyle bikers) who would love to use the park. Unfortionatly they are banned from using it. I agree that allowing bikes might create new issues, but there are always solutions for those problems. There are many parks around the country who do allow bikes so someone has figured out how to deal with them.
I don't really see our park changing to allow bikes so this post probably won't make a difference. I just want to say that there are bikers who love their sport just as much as skaters and who are willing to show their support financially for projects that take them into consideration.
Sorry for the long post. And please don't take this as bashing on skaters or the park. I think it is AWESOME that the City of Walla Walla is supporting a skate park. I also really respect skaters. I am always blown away by the moves you guys can pull of on a board. I also have close friends who skate and I know that they really appreciate having a park here in town.
